With sustainable raw materials to climate-neutral production

Vestolit - vinyl expert with more than 70 years of experience in vinyl production - focuses on the development and production of sustainable and energy-efficient polyvinyl chlorides. With the Future-Fit campaign, the company reduces the CO2 footprint of its products and thus makes a significant contribution to sustainable production and the achievement of climate protection objectives.

Alternative products that contribute to the use of non-fossil raw materials and renewable energies are available for all products in the Vestolit GmbH portfolio. In addition to the use of biological sources for the obtaining of ethylene such as used oils from the food industry, research is being conducted into the potential sources for sustainable raw material production such as chemical recycling and carbon capture technology. Through the mass balance approach, the sustainable vinyl products with the identical chemical properties and specifications as the fossil analogues can be obtained in the short term. In this process, the new advanced PVC products enable a reduction of the product CO2 footprint by 50-90%. The use of non-fossil raw materials and renewable energy are ensured by ISCC PLUS certification.

By decreasing the carbon emission of the Future-Fit vinyl products, the effect on the climate is reduced and an important contribution is made to achieving the climate goal - to produce climate-neutral - in the long term.

Product Carbon Footprint for pigments

As a leading producer of pigments and pigment preparations, Heubach acknowledges the energy intensity involved in pigment production and is committed to reducing emissions. Heubach has taken steps towards carbon neutrality by measuring their environmental impact using the established method of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), a comprehensive approach that accounts for all greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product throughout its entire life cycle.

The Product Carbon Footprint is now offered for a group of 13 Azo pigments, calculated according to Green House Gas Protocol (GHG), ISO Norm (ISO 14067), Together for Sustainability (TfS) PCF Guideline. These calculations provide transparency on emissions from scope 1, 2, and 3, covering plant operations, energy use, raw materials, and transportation. The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is available for Hansa Brilliant Yellow 2GX 70-S, Hostaperm Yellow H3G, PV Fast Yellow HG and others.

Heubach remains committed to reducing the carbon footprint and driving sustainability in the industry through continuous innovation and environmental stewardship.

Independent Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for Kuraray Poval™

For more transparency and sustainability Kuraray Europe GmbH has had a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carried out for Kuraray Poval (Polvinyalcohol) and Mowital (Polyvinylbutyral) that are manufactured in Europe. The aim of this assessment, which is based on the cradle-to-gate approach, is to evaluate the sustainability of Kuraray’s products and identify potential for improvement. The “total climate change” value calculated for 1 kg Kuraray Poval™ is 2.47 kg CO2 equivalent. This means that the carbon footprint of Kuraray Poval™ is 30% lower than the average given for PVOH in a renowned database.

Reducing carbon emissions by alternative raw materials

VESTOPLAST® is mainly used as a raw material for hot melt adhesives. The VESTOPLAST® eCO-grade is made with a mix of bio-based and fossil-based resources. All thermoplastic VESTOPLAST® grades are available under the VESTOPLAST® eCO-line.

At Evonik and TER Chemicals, sustainability is what drives our business. This includes reducing our products’ carbon footprint through different measures like the use of alternative feedstocks. With the VESTOPLAST® eCO-product portfolio, we are significantly reducing carbon emissions using ISCC PLUS* certified mass balanced bio, bio-circular, renewable feedstocks and sources.

Main benefits for your hot melt adhesives

  • Identical physical properties as the traditional VESTOPLAST® portfolio
  • Drop-in replacements in existing formulations
  • Excellent adhesion on various substrates
  • High thermostability, white color, no odor
  • High performance with reduced carbon footprint
  • Foaming ability

Main application fields

The portfolio of VESTOPLAST® eCO is mainly used as a raw material for hot melt adhesives that have application in several industries, including hygiene, automotive, packaging, and woodworking.

*ISCC PLUS SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION

The VESTOPLAST® eCO-portfolio is certified by the ISCC organization and operates under the ISCC PLUS certification based on the mass balance approach. This certification ensures the exact and complete traceability of the sustainable materials used in our production plants and confirms that the used raw materials originate from sustainable sources. With the use of these sustainable raw materials, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, and fossil raw materials are saved.
